TRACK PRACTICES:

For the next 9 days, all classes will be learning and developing techniques to prepare for the annual St.Jude's Track Meet on May 12th here at the school.  Some of the events will include; 60M, 100M, 200M, 400M runs, standing and long running jumps and throwing events.  All students are asked if possible to find 15 mins each evening that they can be more active to prepare.  Some ideas are jogging with your pet, riding your bike, skipping, running on the spot, etc.  Your child can also count their extra curricular activities such as ballet, swimming, or soccer.  This is not intended as extra work for parents but to get students to be more active as the weather continues to improve.

Thursday 20 April 2017

Thurs. 20th

Sorry all, technical difficulties.....

JK/SK/Gr.1/Gr.2 - Stations - for the next few classes, students will have the opportunity to handle and play with various equipment in structured and non-structured formats.  Gym will be divided into 3-4 areas and groups will have approx. 7-8mins to play and then rotate to the next one.

Gr.3/Gr.4 - "Walk the Plank" - classes play a variation of Dodgeball with the addition of walking the plank to catch a ball to re-enter the game.  Continuous play is stressed instead of sitting out if tagged.

Thursday 13 April 2017

Thurs. Apr. 13th

JK - House Games - players from each house had an "Egg Relay Race" in the auditorium.

Gr. 1/Gr.2 - Hula Hoop Relay - 4 teams ran a relay race in the gym with a hoop.  The first team with all players behind the cone and pass through the hoop wins.

Gr. 3 - Key Master - students chose to play again after having so much fun yesterday.

Gr. 4 - CornerBall - new game - basically 4-way soccer with 4 nets in each corner.  Each team has players numbered 1-5.  Teacher selected all # 3's and they played with one ball, trying to be the first to score.  When a goal was scored, another # was chosen to play.  First team to 5 wins the game!

JK - Bowlerama - after playing this game 3-4 times with limited success, students followed all of the rules with very little reminders and the game was much more fun for all.  Great work JK's

SK - Stations - set up 4 stations with various equipment and allow class 2-3 mins per station.  Rotate on whistle.

Gr.3 - Walk the Plank - new game-trial with the Gr.3's.  It is a version of Dodgeball except when you get hit, you must walk to plank and then jump onto a mat.  To re-enter the game, you must catch a ball while jumping in the air that has been thrown by a partner.  This continues until one team is eliminated or time is up.  Students loved it!!!!

Tuesday 11 April 2017

Tues. Apr. 11th

JK/SK/Gr.1/Gr.2:

Island Tag/Bowlerama - students spent a 2nd day developing safe playing techniques in the gym.  We focussed on looking where you run, giving enough space to others and what to do if an accident happens.  Students played very well with each other and showed excellent teamwork/cooperation.

Gr.3/Gr.4:

Key Master - both classes chose to play Key Master as they only had enough time yesterday for 3-4 rounds.  Both classes were reminded of running and hiding safely while moving with a group.  Again, I was very pleased with the effort, honesty and fair play!

Mon.Apr.10th

JK/SK/Gr.1/Gr.2:

Today, we reviewed some safety and etiquette rules here in the gym.  Over the past few classes, the energy has been great but sometimes we need to be reminded of moving safely around the gym and when an accident occurs, how to deal with our feelings and our classmates.

Island Tag is a great game to test this.  A lot of movement in different directions while being chased can cause some issues but all students listened well and demonstrated all of those skills that we discussed at the beginning of class.  Great job by all classes!

Gr.3/Gr.4:

AWESOME!!!!!  For most teachers, they often spend their time teaching lessons and exposing students to new information and methods of problem solving.  Once in a while, and maybe we should do this more often, students teach us some cool stuff.  Today I was introduced to "KEYMASTER".  A game in which one player stands at one end of the gym and tries to spot players who are trying to hide behind obstacles and locate the hidden key.  I will forever keep this game as a go to and remember St. Jude's students for showing me!!!

Friday 7 April 2017

Fri. Apr.7th

JK - today we used tennis racquets and beanbags to experience moving in various ways around the gym.  Students found it challenging to hold the racquet while balancing the beanbag and moving.  We practiced looking down at the beanbag and then up to see where we were going several times.

Gr. 3H/Gr. 2B&2J - all students watched the Talent Show - excellent job to all of the brave children who participated.

SK/JK - Bowlerama/Pizza Tag - class was split into 2 teams on each half of the gym.  Bowling pins were set up all over each half and teams were given soft gym balls.  On GO, teams must roll the ball to try and knock down the pins.  First team that knocks their opponent's pins down wins!

Gr.3/Gr.4 - Frisbee Flip/Pirate's Treasure - students were introduced to this game today and liked a lot!!!  @ teams lined up facing each other on the centerline.  I flipped a Frisbee in the air like a coin.  If it landed on one side, one team could be the chasers and try to tag the others before they crossed the end line.  If tagged, you are part of the other team.  Repeat this until one team is eliminated or only 1 player remains.

Thursday 6 April 2017

Thurs.Apr.6th

Rain and P/T interviews have caused Phys Ed classes to be in their classes.  All classes were very understanding and well behaved.

JK/SK/Gr.1/Gr.2 - I showed the students how to play "Hide the Bone" which is a game in which a student covers their eyes and another student silently takes the object under their chair.  The dog must turn around when asked and observe the class.  They have 3 guesses to choose the person who has their bone!

Gr. 3/4 - we played 2 games;  Black Magic and Build the Tower.  In Black Magic, students were asked a series of questions in which they answered yes or no.  If they were correct, they continued to the next round....great group indoor game.

Build the Tower - teams of 4-5 must use school supplies to stack on top of each other to form a free-standing tower before the other teams.  Really interesting seeing the team cooperation, frustration and tactics after playing it 3-4 rounds.

Wed.Apr.5th

Hello everyone,

My name is Mike MacDonald and this is my first official post as the new PYP Physical Education teacher.  So far I have enjoyed meeting all of the students and staff and getting to know my way around the school.  I am really impressed with the behavior and listening skills of all classes and hope that this will continue.  I look forward to meeting with more of you as the weeks go by.

JK/SK/Gr.2/Gr.2

Today we reviewed listening skills and our "3 whistle rule" which means to stop, look at me, and listen for instruction.  This will reduce the amount of time lost and increase the fun and fitness of your child.  Some of the games today were Pizza Tag, Frozen start/stop and Bowlerama.

Gr.3/Gr.4

As most of the students have shown excellent listening skills and ability to follow instructions, we quickly moved onto some basic relay races and teamwork games.  The games covered this week were;  Hula Hoop Tag and Pirate's Treasure.
